Today marks the first day of my internship at KACE! I’m super excited! My name is Simone and I study at the Academy of Media Design and Technology in Maastricht. I am in my final year of my graphic design course, and it seemed like a good idea to write a blog for the duration of my internship on the different areas of graphic design.
For a graphic designer there is no such thing as too much inspiration. You can get inspiration from books, magazines and the Internet. You can also approach the topic of inspiration differently however, through for example a mind map.
How do you create a mind map? You note down the subject in the middle of the piece of paper. Now write down all keywords, feelings and images that emerge. Basically, what do you already know about the subject? You can for example ask yourself the following questions: Who is concerned? What is happening? Where is it happening? When did it happen? What kind of image do you have with the subject? What should be there? How do you feel about that? What would it smell like?
Tip: try to not just note down the words, but try to already translate them into an image through many small sketches.
You can also get inspiration from conversations: speak with someone about your project, maybe he/she has any advice on approaches, or go for a walk in the forest! You can get inspired by anything! Do you have an inspiration-block? Keep calm and go do something else for a while!
The Dutch version
Vandaag is mijn eerste stagedag bij KACE! Super spannend! Mijn naam is Simone en ik studeer momenteel aan de Academy of Media Design and Technology in Maastricht. Ik doe daar de richting grafisch ontwerp en zit in mijn afstudeerjaar. Het leek mij leuk om tijdens mijn stageperiode een blog te schrijven over verschillende disciplines van grafisch ontwerp.
Als grafisch ontwerper kun je natuurlijk nooit genoeg inspiratie hebben! Je kunt inspiratie halen uit boeken, magazines en natuurlijk van het internet. Maar je kunt het ook eens anders aanpakken, door bijvoorbeeld een woordspin!
Hoe doe je dat? Je noteert in het midden van het blad de titel van het onderwerp. Kijk nu welke steekwoorden, gevoelens, en beelden bij je naar boven komen. Kortom, wat weet je al van dit onderwerp? Je kunt onder andere je het volgende afvragen: Wie zijn er bij betrokken? Wat is er aan de hand? Hoe komt dat? Waar gebeurt het? Wanneer is het gebeurd? Wat voor een beeld heb je ervan? Wat zou er te horen zijn? Wat voel je erbij? Hoe zou het ruiken?
Tip: probeer als ontwerper juist niet de woorden op te schrijven maar probeer dit al te vertalen naar een beeld. Maak allemaal kleine schetsjes.
Je kunt ook inspiratie halen uit gesprekken; praat eens met iemand over je project, misschien heeft hij/zij nog tips, of ga eens lekker wandelen in het bos. Je kunt overal inspiratie uit halen! Lukt het niet? Laat het even los en ga even wat anders doen!
